Major Larry Taylor, USAF (Retired)

I am the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor for Drew High School's GA-20111 AFJROTC Cadet Corps.

Biographical Snapshot

Major Larry L. Taylor graduated from Morrow High School in 1991 where he was active in the Air Force Junior ROTC program, and other extra-curricular activities such as church youth group and Civil Air Patrol.  Larry enlisted in the US Air Force immediately after high school and spent the first 10 years of his Air Force career as a loadmaster on the C-141B and C-17A cargo aircraft traveling to more than 45 countries on 6 continents.  Larry attained the rank of Staff Sergeant prior to finishing college.  He also earned the Aircrew Operations AA degree from the Community College of the Air Force.

Major Taylor attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide at Altus AFB, Oklahoma where he earned the Bachelor of Science degree in Professional Aeronautics with a minor in Aviation Safety.  Major Taylor was selected to attend Officer Training School after college graduation and received a follow-on assignment to Undergraduate Navigator Training at Pensacola NAS, Florida.  At the top of his UNT class he was offered a Weapon Systems Officer assignment on the F-15E Strike Eagle.

Major Taylor flew as a WSO on the F-15E for five years, including two combat deployments to the Central Command area of operations.  He also served as a weapons technician and culminated his assignment as Chief of Mobility.  He successfully deployed the 336th Fighter Squadron, attached maintenance squadron with more than 300 personnel, and 18 F-15E Strike Eagles worth more than $31.1 million each, with zero mobility discrepancies to Bagram, Afghanistan.  Then-Captain Taylor earned the Operations Group Company Grade Officer of the year.

After earning the FAA private pilot, instrument, and commercial certificates while on active duty, Major Taylor was selected to pilot the newest Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), the MQ-9.  He flew the MQ-9 at the 42nd Attack Squadron for 3 years while also working as Chief of Current Operations for the 432nd Operations Support Squadron.  Major Taylor earned the Master of Aeronautical Science degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide at Nellis AFB, NV. 

Major Taylor was invited to join a selectively manned, classified squadron, ultimately flying another Remotely Piloted Aircraft.  He culminated his Air Force career as Chief of Standardization as an examiner/instructor pilot.

Major Taylor has earned the Senior Navigator wings, Senior Enlisted Aircrew Wings, and the Basic Parachute Badge.  Major Taylor’s awards consist of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with 3 Oak leaf Clusters (OLC), the Aerial Achievement Medal with 8 OLC, the Air Force Commendation Medal with 4 OLC, the Air Force Achievement Medal with 2 OLC, and the Combat Action Medal.

Major Taylor retired from the Air Force in 2014 with more than 20 years of service and returned to Georgia.  Currently, Major Taylor teaches AFJROTC at Drew High School in Riverdale.  He is also an Adjunct Professor teaching a master’s level college course on Unmanned Systems and Operations for Embry Riddle Aeronautical University-Worldwide.  He also teaches flight instruction as an FAA Certified Flight Instructor.  Major Taylor is furthering his education earning the Education Specialist degree (Educational Leadership) through Liberty University.

Major Taylor is married to the lovely Stephanie Taylor, his high school sweetheart.  They have three children together: Christopher (13), Zachary (10), and Ashlynn (6).
